  • Singapore Court Sentences Byju Raveendran To Six Months In Jail For Contempt

A Singapore court has sentenced Byju Raveendran, founder of insolvent edtech firm Byju's, to six months' imprisonment for contempt of court over alleged non-compliance with directions concerning disclosure and handling of assets linked to Beeaar Investco and other group entities, Bloomberg reported.

The court also directed Raveendran to surrender to the authorities, pay costs of S$90,000 (about US$70,500), and produce documents establishing his legal ownership of Beeaar Investco, an entity said to have held shares in a related company.

The contempt proceedings arose from litigation brought by investors, including the Qatar Investment Authority. Bloomberg reported that the Singapore court found Raveendran had breached asset-freeze orders and repeatedly failed to comply with disclosure obligations dating back to April 2024.

Raveendran, however, has maintained that the proceedings concern document disclosure disputes and do not involve any finding of fraud or dishonesty.

In India, related proceedings involving Byju's continue, including insolvency litigation and a Karnataka High Court case initiated by Qatar Holding LLC to enforce a reported US$235 million Singapore arbitral award.

Once valued at nearly US$22 billion, Byju's has also faced disputes with lenders over its US$1.2 billion term loan and proceedings in US courts over alleged diversion of lender-linked funds.
