On 5 February 2026, the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, issued a notification amending the import policy for umbrellas from “Free” to “Restricted”. The change applies to umbrellas classified under Chapter 66 of Schedule I (Import Policy) of India's Import Trade Classification (Harmonised System), 2022.
However, imports of umbrellas will continue to be treated as “Free” where the CIF value is Rs. 100 or more per piece. CIF value represents the total landed cost of the imported goods, including the cost of the goods, insurance, and freight up to the Indian port of import. In effect, umbrellas with a CIF value below Rs. 100 per piece will now require restricted import clearance.
The DGFT clarified that the Minimum Import Price (MIP) condition will not apply to imports made by Advance Authorisation holders, Export Oriented Units (EOUs), and Special Economic Zone (SEZ) units, provided that such imported umbrellas are not sold in the Domestic Tariff Area (DTA).
The notification will come into effect immediately.
