GST Council Meeting Gets A New Date On Clash With BRICS Summit

The Goods and Services Tax (GST) Council Meeting has been postponed to October 7, 2026 owing to logistical clashes with the upcoming BRICS Summit.

India is hosting the annual BRICS conference at New Delhi this year and discussions on economic balance amidst the West-Asia Crisis is expected.

The GST Council met last time more than a year ago on September 3, 2025. In the last meeting, simplified slabs and a higher 40% slab for sin and luxury goods were recommended by the council.

The GST Council Secretariat had originally issued an office memorandum on 28 August scheduling the 57th meeting for 12 September in New Delhi, with an officers' meeting on 11 September. The rescheduled meeting is expected to consider pending issues under the GST regime, including input tax credit, registration procedures, and other compliance-related matters.

Reports have also indicated that simplification of GST registration for businesses passing on tax credit exceeding ₹2.5 lakh a month may be considered. These are reported agenda possibilities and are not yet decisions of the Council.

Meetings of GST officers are also scheduled to precede the Council meeting. The officers are expected to meet on 5 and 6 October before the Council convenes on 7 October.
