  • Madras High Court Restrains Piracy Of Lokesh Kanagaraj-Starrer DC Ahead Of Release

The Madras High Court has restrained internet service providers and cable TV operators from facilitating the apprehended copyright violation of Sun TV Network Limited's upcoming Tamil film "DC."

The film, starring filmmaker Lokesh Kanagaraj in his lead acting debut, is slated for theatrical release on August 7.

Justice K. Kumaresh Babu on August 5 passed the order on two applications filed by Sun TV in a copyright infringement suit, one directed at major ISPs including BSNL, Airtel, Vodafone, Jio, and Tata Communications, and another against local cable operators in Chennai.

Sun TV told the court it is the producer of "DC" and relied on the CBFC certificate to establish ownership of the copyright.

The applications sought the injunction, restraining not just the rogue websites but also future infringing URLs discovered during the film's run, along with a direction to block unauthorized streaming, downloading, and distribution of the film in Tamil and any dubbed version.

The Court noted that "it is likely that irreversible injury will occur unless unlawful broadcast is prevented." At the same time, it was mindful that a wide-ranging injunction could affect the legitimate business of some respondents, and directed Sun TV to furnish an indemnity in that regard.

Subject to this condition, the Court granted the ad-interim injunction as sought in both applications, restraining the respondents from infringing or facilitating infringement of "DC" for four weeks.

The matter will be listed again after four weeks.
