Madras High Court Restrains Online Piracy Of Rajinikanth's 'Jailer 2' Ahead Of Release

  • Madras High Court Restrains Online Piracy Of Rajinikanths Jailer 2 Ahead Of Release

The Madras High Court on Tuesday restrained unauthorised copying and streaming of Rajinikanth-starrer Jailer 2, scheduled for release on October 15, in an interim injunction granted to producer Sun TV Network Limited.

Justice P.B. Balaji, by an order dated October 13, also directed internet service providers and other concerned service providers to block access to identified piracy websites and additional mirror, redirect and alphanumeric URL variants notified by Sun TV or its authorised agents.

Sun TV approached the Court seeking protection of its copyright in Jailer 2 in Tamil and other languages in which the film is dubbed or released. It sought to restrain unauthorised reproduction, uploading, downloading, streaming, making the film available and communicating it to the public through mirror websites and other variants.

The broadcaster also sought directions to service providers to block access to identified websites and additional mirror, redirect and alphanumeric variants, URLs and links, including prefix and suffix variants, notified in writing by Sun TV or its agents, Aiplex Software Private Limited and Block X Technologies Private Limited.

After examining the suit documents, the Court noted that Sun TV was the film's producer and had asserted that it had not authorised or licensed any person to release the film without permission.

“When the plaintiff has come before this Court specifically alleging that he has not granted any authorisation or licence to any person whomsoever and more so, the defendants, who are likely to infringe and release the film unauthorisedly, without proper authority or licence from the applicant/plaintiff, I am satisfied that the applicant/plaintiff is entitled to an interim order as prayed for, having made out a prima facie case,” the court observed.

The Court further held that infringement of Sun TV's rights would cause irreparable hardship and that the balance of convenience favoured granting interim relief.

“Accordingly, there shall be an order of interim injunction in OA Nos.1130, 1131 and 4432 of 2026 as prayed for,” the Court ordered.

The Court directed that notice to the respondents be returnable by November 10, 2026, and permitted private notice.
