  • Madras High Court Closes Aamir Khan Productions Copyright Suit Over “Batwara 1947” After Withdrawal

The Madras High Court has dismissed as withdrawn a copyright suit filed by Aamir Khan Productions Pvt Ltd to protect its film “Batwara 1947” from piracy.

Justice P.B. Balaji recorded the withdrawal on October 13, 2026.

The production house had sued 33 defendants. These included telecom operators and internet service providers such as Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited, Bharti Airtel, Reliance Jio Infocomm and Vodafone India, as well as several local cable operators.

It sought a permanent injunction against the first 29 defendants and other unnamed persons, with directions to block websites and web pages hosting content relating to the film, including future websites discovered after its release.

Against defendants 30 to 33, it sought to restrain infringement of the film through camcording, transmission and distribution across physical and digital media.

The matter was heard by Justice Balaji on the plaintiff's side alone.

Counsel for the production house told the Court that the company had instructed him to withdraw the suit.

The Court noted that he had also made an endorsement to that effect in the court bundle.

“Accordingly, CS No.239 of 2026 is dismissed as withdrawn. No costs.” The two connected interim applications, OA Nos. 835 and 836 of 2026, were dismissed as a consequence.
