Delhi High Court Orders Suspension Of Over 120 "JIO LOTTERY" Websites In Reliance Industries' Trademark Suit
The Delhi High Court has ordered the suspension of 126 JIO lottery websites and restrained their operator from using Reliance Industries' JIO trademark, observing that the websites “prima facie seem to satisfy the test of rogue website”.
Justice Purushaindra Kumar Kaurav passed the ad interim order on October 7 after examining the websites and their content. The court referred to its earlier ruling in UTV Software Communication Ltd. v. 1337X.to, which laid down the test for identifying rogue websites.
Reliance told the court that websites such as jiolotteryi.com, jiolotterylogin.com and jiolotterygame.com use its registered and well-known “JIO” trademark in full. It alleged that the websites also use names such as “JIO LOTTERY” and “JIO LOTTERY GAME”, along with associated logos, for lottery, gaming, payment-related and allied services.
The company argued that this use could cause confusion and deception, dilute its trademark and injure its business. It sought to have the websites blocked until its application for an injunction was decided.
The court restrained the website operator from registering, operating, controlling, maintaining, promoting, advertising or using “JIO”, “JIO LOTTERY”, “JIO LOTTERY GAME” or any mark identical, near-identical or deceptively similar to Reliance's trademark. The restraint also covers domain names and other ways of dealing with the impugned marks.
Domain registrars were directed to suspend the websites listed in Annexure A until further orders. The list includes the primary websites, mirror and redirecting websites, and websites with similar structures.
The intermediary operating Blogger was separately directed to disable access to and take down the webpage at wwwjiokbcindia.blogspot.com, along with the infringing content hosted on it.
Replies to the injunction application must be filed within four weeks, followed by rejoinders, if any, within three weeks thereafter. The application will next be considered on November 30, 2026.
The suit will come before the Joint Registrar on December 10, 2026, for marking of exhibits.
