The Centre has appointed former Punjab and Haryana High Court judge Justice Anupinder Singh Grewal as President of the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT).

He succeeds Justice Ramalingam Sudhakar, who had been serving as NCLT President since November 1, 2021, and demitted office earlier this year.

Born on March 10, 1964, in the Ludhiana district, Punjab, Grewal hails from a family with a background in public service. His father retired as Chief Engineer in the Punjab PWD (B&R), while his maternal grandfather served as an IAS officer.

He completed his schooling from St. John's High School, Chandigarh, and Class XII from Yadavindra Public School, Patiala in 1982.

He pursued B.A. (Hons.) and M.A. in History from St. Stephen's College, Delhi, before obtaining his LL.B. from the University of Delhi in 1992, following which he began practice at the Punjab and Haryana High Court.

Grewal went on to serve in multiple law officer roles for the State of Punjab, including as Assistant Advocate General, Deputy Advocate General, Senior Deputy Advocate General and Additional Advocate General, handling civil, constitutional, criminal, service and land acquisition matters, as well as public interest litigation.

He was also appointed Central Government Counsel in 2007 and later served as Senior Panel Counsel for the Union of India before the Punjab and Haryana High Court, appearing in significant matters including writ petitions, arbitration cases and challenges to Central Acts. He was appointed amicus curiae in several cases, including proceedings examining the validity of judicial orders pronounced without reasons.

He was elevated as an Additional Judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court on September 25, 2014, transferred to the Rajasthan High Court later that year, and confirmed as a permanent judge in 2016 before being repatriated to the Punjab and Haryana High Court.

Apart from his legal career, Grewal represented Punjab in the Cooch Behar Trophy cricket tournaments and has been an active participant in the Juris Cup golf tournament for lawyers and judges.
