The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has revamped its Document Number Verification System (DNVS), allowing recipients to check whether a letter or notice was issued by the regulator.

The regulator had launched the system in April 2025. The revamped version now requires the subject matter of a SEBI letter as a mandatory detail when verifying a physical letter or notice. It has also been aligned with the Outward Number format generated through the outward module of SEBI's E-Office system.

To verify a communication, the recipient, or someone acting on their behalf, must validate their credentials and enter the required details. These include the outward number, name of the SEBI official who issued the letter, date of the letter, subject matter and recipient's name.

The system allows users to verify whether the communication was issued by SEBI. However, the verification does not extend to the contents of the letter.

“Such verification does not constitute a verification of the contents of that letter,” SEBI said.

If the details entered match SEBI's records, the system confirms that the letter or communication was issued by the regulator. Where no record is found, the user can re-enter the correct details or seek confirmation from SEBI by email.

The revamped system has been operationalised from September 2026. Communications issued before September 2026 can still be verified by sending the necessary details to SEBI by email.

The DNVS remains available on SEBI's website under the “Authenticate Document Number Issued by SEBI” option. A QR code in the press release can also be used to access the verification webpage.

SEBI has also made a detailed guidance note on using the system available on the webpage.
