Actor Rakesh Bedi Moves Delhi High Court Seeking Protection Of Personality Rights

The matter was listed before Justice Anup Jairam Bhambhani on Wednesday, but upon mentioning, was sent to another bench dealing with Intellectual Property Division (IPD) matters.

No further details of Bedi's suit are available at this stage, and the case is expected to be taken up before the appropriate bench in due course.

Bedi's move adds to a growing list of personality rights suits before the Delhi High Court in recent months, largely centred on the misuse of celebrities' names, images and likeness online, including through AI-generated content, impersonating accounts and unauthorised merchandise.

Actor Janhvi Kapoor's suit against a large set of URLs allegedly infringing her personality rights has been one of the more closely watched among these, with the court declining to pass a blanket injunction and instead limiting interim relief to categories such as obscene content, while leaving broader questions, including monetised exploitation of a celebrity's image, open for further hearing.

Actor Meenakshi Chaudhary's suit followed a similar pattern, with the court granting protection only against sexually explicit content while declining relief on claims that her image was being commercially exploited without clear proof of monetisation.

Actor Khushi Kapoor has also separately approached the court in recent weeks over similar concerns.

Several of these matters, including Kapoor's suit, have now been clubbed together for hearing before Justice Bhambhani, with the court appointing amici curiae to assist it in working out the broader legal contours of personality rights protection.
