Actor Kriti Sanon Moves Delhi High Court To Protect Her Personality Rights
Actor Kriti Sanon has approached the Delhi High Court seeking protection of her personality rights.
At the outset, Justice Purushaindra Kumar Kaurav asked Sanon's counsel, Advocate Pravin Anand, to explain what personality rights protect. Anand submitted that these rights cover aspects of an individual's identity, including their image and voice.
The Court asked Anand to assist it in taking a “comprehensive and holistic” view of the subject by submitting a compilation of relevant judgments and other material, along with his understanding of the law.
It also told him that he could submit notes already filed in other pending personality rights cases and need not restrict his submissions to Sanon's suit alone.
The matter has been passed over for now. The court said it would pass a comprehensive order after considering the material placed before it.
Sanon's suit is among several personality rights cases being heard together by the Delhi High Court.
In actor Janhvi Kapoor's suit, Justice Anup Jairam Bhambhani refused a blanket injunction against nearly 6,884 URLs. He confined interim relief to obscene content, and said, “It is going out of hand.” He has since appointed advocate Gautam Bhatia as amicus curiae in that case, with advocate Rohan Alva already assisting in a connected suit.
In actor Meenakshi Chaudhary's suit, the court granted protection only against sexually explicit content, and asked for proof that anyone was actually making money from her image.
In actor Rakesh Bedi's suit, which is also before Justice Kaurav, the court said it must “draw some line” on how personality rights and publicity rights overlap, and asked lawyers for compilations of judgments.
