Supreme Court Grants Bail To Concast Steel MD Sanjay Surekha In ₹6,210 Cr PMLA Case
The Supreme Court on Wednesday granted bail to Sanjay Kumar Surekha, Chairman and Managing Director of Concast Steel and Power Ltd. (CSPL), in a money laundering case involving alleged proceeds of crime worth ₹6,210.72 crore.
The Supreme Court on August 12 reserved its judgment on Sanjay Surekha's challenge to the Calcutta High Court's November 14, 2025 order rejecting his bail plea in a money laundering case involving alleged proceeds of crime worth ₹6,210.72 crore.
A Bench of Justices Aravind Kumar and Vipul M. Pancholi passed the order while allowing Surekha's challenge to the Calcutta High Court's November 14, 2025 order rejecting his bail plea.
The case arose from allegations that Surekha, Chairman and Managing Director of Concast Steel and Power Ltd fraudulently inflated the company's turnover to secure substantial bank credit and diverted funds through shell companies. The ED alleged that the proceeds of crime amounted to ₹6,210.72 crore. Surekha has remained in custody since December 18, 2024.
The Calcutta High Court had held that Surekha's arrest complied with Section 19 of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), found prima facie material indicating his alleged involvement in money laundering, and ruled that he failed to satisfy the twin conditions for bail under Section 45 of the Act. It rejected his plea, also citing concerns regarding possible evidence tampering and witness influence.
A detailed copy of the judgment is awaited.
