Sun TV Moves Madras High Court Against Unauthorised Usage Of Its Songs From Coolie, Jailer Movies By CSK

Update: 2026-03-13 11:13 GMT

Sun TV Network has approached the Madras High Court seeking to restrain Chennai Super Kings (CSK) from using its songs from the movies "Jailer," “Jailer 2," and “Coolie” for the team's promotional activities.

Sun has also claimed damages to the tune of Rs 1 crore.

When the matter came up before Justice Senthilkumar Ramamoorthy on Friday (13th March 2026), Senior Advocate J Ravindran, appearing for the network company, stated that the team had used songs that belonged to Sun for its promotional videos.

While Senior Advocate PS Raman, appearing for the cricket team, admitted that the songs had been used without prior approval, he informed the court that the videos were pulled back immediately on receipt of intimation by Sun. Raman also informed the court that the team will not be using any of the songs belonging to the network unless a license is obtained. The court recorded the undertaking and directed the team to file an undertaking to that effect. The case has now been adjourned to Monday (16th March).

The grievance of the plaintiff is that the 1st defendant used snippets from such songs on videos uploaded on social media platform. Senior Advocate PS Raman appears for the defendant and submits that an email was received in relation to the alleged infringement and immediately on receipt thereof the allegedly infringing videos have been removed. He also submits that audio from the schedule mentioned movies will not be used unless a license is received from the plaintiff. This statement is recorded. List on Monday for filing affidavit,” the court recorded in its order.

In its plea, Sun has stated that on March 1, 2026, the team had unveiled its new jersey through a promotional video shared on CSK's official social media pages in Instagram, X, YouTube and Facebook. It has been submitted that the video had prominently used audio tracks and dialogues from Jailer, Jailer 2 and coolie and further incorporated copyrighted audio elements at multiple junctures.

Sun submitted that the video was intended to launch and market the new jersey of the team, featuring its logo and brand names of its principal sponsors. It has been submitted that through the exploitation of copyrighted works, the team has tried to aid the sale of its match jersey which is priced at Rs 2399, along with other merchandise in South India and more predominantly in Chennai.

It has been stated that the team has infringed Sun's copyright for commercial gain with a clear intention of leveraging popularity, goodwill, and commercial appeal to garner enhanced viewership, publicity, and brand value for the team and its sponsors.

Sun has further stated that it had immediately contacted the team and objected to the use of the copyrighted works, but the content continued to remain online during prime time hours and was removed only later after gaining substantial promotional and commercial mileage.

The network has stated that it issued a legal notice dated March 1, 2026, calling upon the team to cease and desist from infringement and remove the content from all digital platforms.

Sun has also sought a direction against the team to disclose the revenue generated through the promotional activities and deposit the same before the court to the credit of the suit.
